ABSTRACT
The Xijie historic quarter is located in the buffer zone of the ‘Dujiangyan Irrigation System’ World Heritage site, covers an area of 4.03 hectares and comes under the administration of Dujiangyan city. On 12 May 2008, China’s Sichuan province experienced one of its most devastating earthquakes measuring 8 M s, 1 during which the Xijie historic quarter was severely damaged. Eighty per cent of the buildings in the historic quarter could not continue functioning. A reconstruction project started in 2009 and was completed in 2013 (Figures 18.1 and 18.2).
