ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a preliminary overview of experiential dreamwork methods, and suggests cybernetic principles for regulation of the energy. American psychologist Charles Tart, a pioneer in the exploration of the states of consciousness, describes a state of consciousness as a dynamic pattern of psychological systems and subsystems. In the dreaming state, consciousness is online to unconscious intelligence. The traditional free association technique that Sigmund Freud developed is an altered state of consciousness where normal waking consciousness is disconnected, and psychic contents, no matter how foreign or illogical they may seem, are employed in the total analysis of the dream. Even various forms of creative expression about a dream can inspire deeper understanding or re-affect the unconscious which then responds with new dreams. Employing cohesive theories, methods and skills acquired through practical training will contribute to doing justice to the complexity of dreams.
