ABSTRACT

The enhancement of self-concept has been an important aim of psychotherapy and education programs. Despite numerous efforts to change self-concept there appears to be no consistent answer as to whether it is possible to enhance self-concept as a consequence of these programs. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of these studies, determines whether self-concept can be enhanced, ascertains which types of programs are more effective, and identifies important moderators that appear to be influential in the effectiveness of various programs.
