ABSTRACT

Data for this study were obtained from the Otheguy-Zentella Corpus (OZC) of Spanish in New York City. This chapter gives an overview of the research that has resulted from the OZC and describes the conditions under which OZC was created and the stratification of the informants upon whose speech it is based. The independent variables thought to be of central import to the linguistic behavior of Spanish speakers in the city are enumerated. The dependent measures of the study, including ‘lexical borrowing rate’, ‘flagging rate’ and measures of innovation and sharedness, are defined in detail. The nature of statistical analyses and interpretation of results is described.
