ABSTRACT
Therapists come together in groups for many reasons. Many therapists initially learn about group therapy in academic settings within classrooms. They may learn group techniques via lectures from a professor, or, if they are more fortunate, they may learn about groups from actually doing or observing groups within the classroom setting. Therapists also come together in groups during educational workshops, where they may get to participate in or observe structured sessions, often using fish-bowl techniques, where the mental health professionals in the audience watch the mental health participants within the staged, but often very therapeutic, training group. Therapists come together for supervision of cases and difficult situations, utilizing one another for consultation and discussion. Therapists come together in groups for support, often after working in traumatic situations; and, therapists come together in groups for their own group therapy. Individuals come to therapy with their own visions of themselves and others, and mental health professionals do so as well.
