ABSTRACT
In Japan, when estimating the resistance characteristics of a pile against a force acting perpendicular to the pile axis, the pile is usually modeled as a beam on an elastic medium. This modeling approach is simple, yet has enough accuracy for practical design situations. When a pile is modeled as a beam on an elastic medium, the modeling of the subgrade reaction is the most important part of design from the view of geotechnical engineering.
