ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses some of the main clues that should guide the analysis and critical approach to the notion of public space. It focuses on one of the crucial elements of the social and political transformations in which people are involved as a result of the globalization process: the ongoing cosmopolitanization of social and political life. The chapter reviews some of the elements that prove the relevance of adequately addressing the cosmopolitan public space and discusses an analysis of the new understandings of cosmopolitan territories. After globalization and subsequent transformations within modernity, people cannot continue to address the public space from the same deterministic perspective as in early modernity. This still cannot result in the dissolution of the local in favour of an abstract global space, but in its necessary critical and reflexive transformation as well as its complex interaction.
