ABSTRACT
By drawing on Hegel and Bakhtin, this chapter applies a dialectical dialogical perspective to storytelling in order to dissect the complexity of performative storytelling dynamics. Following Boje, the storytelling dimensions are composed by 1) narrative – counter-narrative, 2) living stories, and 3) antenarrative. Paying more scholarly attention to dialectics in storytelling may provide an opportunity for academic contributions to a conceptual clarification of the interplay among the various storytelling concepts, as well as of their analytical contribution to understanding and analyzing tensions and contradictions in the management of complex organizational and social worlds. Based upon the discussion between Hegel and Bakhtin, the chapter suggests a distinction between ‘the dialectical betweenness of narrative – counter-narrative’ (N-CN) on the one hand, and ‘the tensed dissensus of living stories – counter-stories’ (LS-CS) on the other; two concepts that could illuminate the dynamics of storytelling organizations. The distinction is offered as a meta-theoretical contribution to the field of storytelling. On a practical level, the chapter aims to enrich our understanding of how to manage the antenarrative work of bridging the gap between N-CN and LS-CS, while establishing the foundations of an organizational future.
