ABSTRACT

The major focus in Training session is for parents to report on their first special playtime with their children, with the most time spent reviewing the video of the parent who volunteered to be video-recorded. The emphasis of Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) training is on learning by experience and observation. Other benefits of video-recorded supervision are enhanced opportunities for vicarious learning for all group members and the opportunity for parents to give, as well as receive, help from each other. Limits set in play sessions help children practice self-control and begin to learn to stop themselves in the real world. The therapist demonstrates limit setting through role-play, as with every skill that is introduced, and if time permits, a short video clip of limit setting is shown. In some cases, the experienced CPRT therapist may introduce the limit-setting skill earlier in this session in response to a parent’s concern, rather than wait until the end of the training session.
