This chapter provides descriptions of and specifications for the cranes, jibs, and arms used in the industry. Cranes, jibs, and arms can be set lower or higher, depending on which base, dolly, tripod, or other crane they are being used with. The post on all jibs, cranes, and arms is the pivot point, the balance point, the place where the arm will teeter-totter and spin. A good safety practice when letting a camera operator off a riding crane is to lock the brakes, put an arm on the chains, step on the arm, have another grip take the place of the camera operator, then reduce the lead or mercury for counterbalance. Some of these cranes, jibs, and arms may look short, but they may be the type that have kits or extensions to lengthen their reach or to change from remote operation to carrying a cameraperson or assistant.
