ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 sets the structure and scene for the second half of the book, which moves from theory and policy to practice-based case studies. It sets up the format for eleven forthcoming case studies in Chapters 6 and 7 on social sustainability and urban development projects. Eight case studies across these two chapters will be analysed with the framework on pro-community behaviours and psychological responses indicative of a social sustainable community that was introduced in Chapter 4. This chapter features two case studies to show the authors’ approach in action: first, an example from Buenos Aires, Argentina, that depicts a campaign to prevent developers from building tower blocks that engulf historic homes and damage community feelings and social connections; second, a case study from Delhi, India, showing aspects of urban form in three housing developments that influence pro-community behaviours and psychological responses, and those that do not. This case study is included in the overall analysis.
