ABSTRACT

In 2016 the Tomb Raider franchise celebrated its 20th anniversary. At this time, a transmedia world, defined through movies, comics, books, and fans was built around the strong female lead character Lara Croft. The extension of the transmedia world through the comics highlights an essential impact of Lara Croft: It is possible to explore her character from different points of view. The comics do not only focus on what happens in-between the games; they rather create all-new stories and close some gaps in the storyline. The comics also present the possibility to respond to fan desires or to explore the relationships among characters. The comics and videogames thus offer new educational potentials on the basis of transmedia storytelling, creating new awareness within the franchise. They offer a better disclosure of biographical aspects. This chapter explores these potentials, the difference between the comics released before and after the reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise, and the differences between the comic books and games within the franchise, focusing on the essential functions that the comic books fulfill.
