ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses common challenges to effective transition in creative ways both in terms of the structures which benefit the process but also through suggesting a range of exciting cross-phase projects which inspire children and shows that their receiving secondary schools their true capability. Schools can work effectively to ease transition between phases and to develop teachers professionally by sharing practice. The chapter explores the considering the general landscape of transition — namely, the challenges of the primary to secondary transition for all subjects before focusing on transition for languages. Transition for languages was identified as an issue back in the 1960s when the primary French pilot projects, such as 'French from Eight' were undertaken. The chapter explores the challenge of transition for languages and its background. It highlights a range of transition activities and approaches to transition from simple activities to larger projects.
