ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 extends the framework presented in Chapter 3 by expanding on the nature of the flow modality in digital score musicking. It does this by asking the questions What creative relationships are stimulated by the digital score inside the flow? and What is the meaning of these in musicking? The first section starts with a working definition of flow as ‘the experience of musicking from the perspective of being inside the activity’ and the ‘state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter’. From this, it expands upon the two signatures of creative relationships (introduced in Chapter 3) and evaluates the experience of musicking using the basic structure of the following through a significant digital score collaboration between the author and US cellist Craig Hultgren:

Taking-in—within the flow, musicians make connections with the digital score as they reach out, suggest, offer and shift through the tendrils of affordance experienced through notions of liveness, presence and interaction

Taken-into—the digital score can establish a world of creative possibilities for exploration through the flow through the domains of play, time and sensation
