ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the public discourse on the crisis in the Italian media, aiming at identifying its most significant traits and the role of protest in that discourse, focusing in particular on the issues of labour and education, the centrality of which emerges both from this analysis and from the literature on anti-austerity protest. It analyses the public discourse on the crisis, based on the political-claim analysis, in relation to existing data and literature on anti-austerity protest in Italy. The chapter aims to reconstruct the main traits of the discourse on the crisis in the Italian media; while at the theoretical level it contributes to the understanding of the reciprocal relationship between media discourse and anti-austerity protest. It focuses on the former of these goals, while the last section focuses on the latter. The chapter also focuses on the representation of the economic crisis in the Italian media.
