ABSTRACT

Warehouse superstore is the term given to a currently expanding branch of retail stores in which the majority of merchandise is stored in the store sales area. Due to the wide range of stock on offer and high requirement for manual handling activities, this domain has been identified as potentially hazardous for its workers. This chapter discusses major retail chain in which store workers are required to regularly engage in manual handling activities. It focuses on those workers who typically worked on the shop floor during store opening hours, and had a range of activities to undertake as part of their normal day-to-day job. A programme of research incorporating observational study, task and cognitive task analysis, and safety culture assessment was undertaken. The Critical Decision Method (CDM) component involved one researcher visiting 15 different stores and interviewing store workers who had previously been involved in an injury-causing incident as reported in the company 2008/9 accident and injury data.
