This chapter provides an introduction to key concepts and premises of critical pedagogy, considers some tensions and resonances between the fields of critical pedagogy and educational technology, and offers some initial practical suggestions toward making individual and collective practices in educational technology more responsive and responsible at the intersections of culture, learning, and technology. The term critical pedagogy encompasses educational approaches that are focused on empowering learners to be full participants in democratic society through educational practices that are connected to learners' own experiences, address issues directly and immediately relevant to learners and their communities, and seek to transform systems and structures that contribute to oppression and marginalization. By focusing narrowly on diversity, it is easy to fall into categorizing, collecting, and reporting differences, while doing nothing to dismantle or transform systemic and structural inequities and increase inclusion and access for marginalized people and groups.
