ABSTRACT
On the basis of cropping patterns 92 units can be identified. Comparison of cropping patterns is important in planning agricultural development because of the variation in the sources of incomes of the farmers of different regions. The cropping patterns were cross-checked with data in the agriculture statistics division of the Ministry of Agriculture, with the data obtained by the Census of agriculture in 1960, with various Survey and Settlement returns, with data collected for irrigation feasibility studies and by personal observaitons. Crop area percentanges are based mainly on 1965-70 data. Flooding levels, flood timing, soil associations, drainage patterns, total and seasonal rainfall, population density, urban economic influence, transportation pattern and many other factors determine the land-use patterns. Karatoa-Bangali Floodplain is the right bank floodplain of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and its tributaries. Overbank flooding by the BrahmaPutra-Jamuna has been reduced by the construction of the Brahmaputra Right Bank Embankment.
