ABSTRACT

A standardised approach for data collection was necessary in order to benchmark the City-HUB model. This benchmark study of European urban transport interchanges is based on two complementary approaches: the validation of the City-HUB model through a set of checklists and good practices for resolving them, and monitoring and assessing the interchange. The checklist set was implemented on six selected validation case studies, which were:

1. Gare Lille Flandres/Europe (France) 2. Utrecht Centraal (the Netherlands) 3. Oslo bus terminal Vaterland (Norway) 4. Paseo de Gracia, Barcelona (Spain) 5. Prague terminus, Dejvická (Czech Republic) 6. Intermodal terminal of Miskolc (Hungary) (under planning)

The six validation cases represent diverse characteristics in terms of modes covered, size of interchange, number of passengers handled, location in the urban area, time since construction and stakeholders involved (see Appendix I). Yin (2009) points out that substantial analytical benefit arises from using comparative studies.
