ABSTRACT

There is a considerable literature on the ways in which people all along the life span are seeing, articulating, and explaining the world. This literature shows that students come to school with ways of talking about natural phenomena that differ from the ways scientists talk. These different ways of talking are evident in the following brief excerpt from an interview with a seven-year-old child who already features in Chapter 2. The interview intends to solicit explanations of the origins of day and night, the phases of the moon, and the seasons.
