ABSTRACT

To convey a flavor of the OECD’s sprawling undertakings and its contribution to global governance, this chapter sketches some of the paramount issues under discussion in the organization. The chapter commences with areas overtly mentioned in the OECD Convention such as sustainable economic growth, trade, and development before looking at some of their tacit outgrowths including taxation and private sector governance. Later sections examine a host of environmental, technological, and social matters that are now more prominent in the OECD’s portfolio. Where appropriate the derivation of present work is teased out, especially if the OECD’s interference exerted an invasive influence on present-day thinking or practice. The main focus, however, is upon topical OECD interventions in the form of ideas, publications, datasets, and peer reviews (normative governance), OECD Acts (legal governance), and collaborations with other international institutions (palliative governance).
