ABSTRACT

This chapter allows a number of more general observations about the nature of, and scope for, cleaner technology. It explores the broader implications of this research for our understanding of the nature of cleaner technology. The chapter presents the taxonomy of cleaner approaches and applies to the projects encountered. This highlights two issues of particular importance to the pursuit of more far reaching improvements in environmental performance: the organization of change across the product supply chain, and the promotion of more radical innovation, particularly where this relates to a wider range of players involved in technological innovation. Implementation of cleaner technology depends on the firm's capacity for innovation; at the same time, the ability to innovate is central to the firm's competitiveness. Several of the cleaner technologies adopted in our case studies were already widely adopted in other countries.
