ABSTRACT

Dame Lesley Southgate’s research interests were initially focused on the topic of sexually-transmitted infections, particularly chlamydial infections in women that she had encountered at her practice. Dame Lesley completed a three-year project with a team of experts to determine a way of getting a comprehensive insight into medical and clinical practice, and therefore how this could be assessed. On 12 June 1999, Dame Lesley was honoured with being appointed DBE for her services to standards of practice and Primary Care. After her time as president of the Royal College of General Practitioners, Dame Lesley had a multitude of organisations reaching out to gain her expertise and advice. Dame Lesley’s work in medical education and assessment has reached the furthest corners of the globe. In 2008, she was awarded the John P. Hubbard Award by the United States National Board of Medical Examiners for her role in assessing competence and performance in physician practice.
