ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces Taiwan’s general dance education, including the ‘Dance Talented Class’, and dance programmes found in higher education. Taiwan’s dance development in general education should be introduced through two curricular strands: dance for regular students and dance for talented students, which is called the ‘Dance Talented Class’. In particular, under the curricular strand to enhance students’ mental and physical abilities, social adaptation, cultural awareness and understanding, the new dance curriculum plays a more important role to reach this goal. Due to different educational focus, dance programmes at the graduate school level appear to have bigger variations. For the undergraduate and higher levels, teacher qualifications are based on his or her scholarship and professional experiences. As for the dance teachers of the ‘Dance Talented Class’, based on the law of teaching Special Education, qualified teachers are required to take Special Education courses.
