ABSTRACT

Chapter 8, “Daniels’s mature works” concerns Mabel Daniels’s later works, which are unique in style and defined by stylistic shifts. These shifts, and an invitation to a deeper musical analysis these present, distinguish her later works from her earlier ones. These later compositions reflect important changes in musical style that took place during the first half of the twentieth century, as well as coincide with the institutionalization of an American art music. While maintaining her stylistic integrity, Daniels appears to have chosen from among available contemporary styles associated with certain other successful composers—and even these composers’ particular works—as inspiration for her own compositions. By doing so, Daniels sought to ensure that her own works were included in the canon of American art music.
