ABSTRACT

Transportation systems require reliable information for monitoring and managing operations to maximize the safety and efficiency of the highway system. This chapter describes the development of sensor and data fusion as a technique for combining data and information from disparate sources and how the methods can be adapted to traffic management. It explains the importance of the early incorporation of sensor and data fusion into the overall systems design of an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) transportation network. Data fusion is widely applied in diverse fields in civilian and military applications such as surveillance and reconnaissance, wildlife habitat monitoring, and detection of environment hazards. Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that should be utilized to develop complex systems including those that incorporate sensor and data fusion into ITS. The logical architecture is designed from the conceptual architecture. It consists of detailed canonical component types and interfaces to formalize intercomponent services.
