ABSTRACT

Franz Rosenzweig's philosophy created a new understanding of Jewish theology and made a deep impression on the world. Paul Van Buren's thought evolved from a philosophy similar to Karl Barth's to one concerned with reformulating a new and positive interpretation of Jewish reality for Christianity. Van Buren liked Rosenzweig's religious existential philosophy based on the here and now and used his theory of Creation, Revelation, and Redemption in his own writings. Abraham Joshua Heschel, the survivor of the Holocaust, emphasizes Jewish survival. He warned Christians that they cannot relate fully to the biblical God without relating to the people of Israel. Heschel also emphasizes the importance of the Bible in both religions. Christians and Jews pray from the same Book of Psalms and draw their thinking from the same Jewish Bible. David Hartman's efforts are influenced by his native American culture, a culture founded on pluralism.
