ABSTRACT

Sometimes, even when `homework' contracts have been carefully planned and negotiated, the client does not complete them, or ®nds the homework to have been counterproductive in some way. In this instance, ®rstly review and check the assignment ± did it reinforce something for the client? Did it implicitly `rubberband' the client in any way? What are the transferential implications of the original homework task, and also of the client's non-compliance? Sometimes analysis of the transference can suggest why a particular contract was not successful. It is as if the client's unconscious wisdom guided them away from completing an assignment that would reinforce their script in some way.
