ABSTRACT

There lived and dwelt a stingy miser, an old man. And he had two sons and masses of money. He heard Death approaching so he locked himself in his hut, sat down on the trunk, and began swallowing golden coins and eating banknotes, and thus he finished his life. His sons came, put the dead man beneath the holy icons, and called a deacon to read the Psalter. Suddenly at midnight the Unclean One appeared in the image of a human. He raised the dead old man up on his shoulder and said, "Deacon, hold him by his hems." And they began shaking the old man. "You can keep your money, but the sack is mine!" So he carried him off and became invisible.
