ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Science and Technology Studies (STS) insights to frame the overall project for making use of the opportunity to also briefly introduce the insights to those who are less familiar with the body of scholarly work. An important pillar supporting the proposition that drip irrigation systems can help solve contemporary water and food challenges is science: it is because the design and functioning of drip technologies is based on the universal laws of nature that drip systems are as true and are believed to be capable of fulfilling expectations. Drip in the world of policymaking is about DRIP – the e-version of drip irrigation elevated to universal status through the use of specific notions of science and technology as existing outside of history and society. DRIP functions as a useful device to bring together different interests and political projects, while also allowing to depoliticize contentious questions of water re-allocation.
