ABSTRACT
A collateral opportunity to enhance the capabilities of North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) ground forces to defeat the initial Warsaw Pact attacks would be to employ advanced technology scatterable antitank mines in order to delay, disrupt, canalize, block and destroy Warsaw Pact attacking armored units. Since its earliest days, the primary strategic concept for the defense of NATO has been that of Forward Defense. The Warsaw Pact armies have long enjoyed a substantial advantage in the number of armored fighting vehicles and ar-tillery weapons deployed in Central Europe. NATO should continue to push the improvement of its current direct fire antiarmor weapons. The bottom graphic illustrates the capabilities of artillery to deliver mines into an enemy’s rear areas. Emerging technology top-attack antiarmor weapons offer another important opportunity to further improve NATO’s antiarmor capabilities. In addition to the initiatives, other modernization initiatives are also very important.
