ABSTRACT

On May 16, 2005, the Associated Press released a story about a foiled plot by Jewish extremists to fire a missile on the Dome of the Rock, a holy Muslim shrine situated on top of the Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem. Surprising about this plot was not its novelty-in the late 1970s, a terrorist group known as the Jewish Underground (Makhteret) had attempted to blow up the same sitebut instead the perpetrators’ plan, as reported by the Israeli police, to “commit suicide after firing an anti-tank missile at the holy site in Jerusalem and throwing grenades at police who would try to arrest them” (Lavie 2005).
