ABSTRACT

The previous chapter has already provided a glimpse into the difficulties of defining terrorism. This chapter delves deeper into this issue and looks at five approaches to the definition of terrorism. First it looks into list-type of approaches, which simply enumerate the acts and actors to be named terrorist; second, it provides a historical overview of how terror and terrorism have been conceived over time; third, it looks into attempts to create an analytical definition of terrorism; fourth, it looks at the normative type of definitions and assesses the arguments for adding the normative dimension; and finally, it elaborates on the CTS approach to this issue.
