ABSTRACT

This chapter provides definitions of the key concepts used in the book. In particular, the concept of terrorism (including its political motives, its main components, and its presence in America) and its origins is discussed. Lone-wolf terrorists are also described, and the concepts of gender and female/woman are defined. The role of communication, with a particular emphasis on persuasion and the audience, is also identified as of vital importance. The second part of the chapter consists of a broad introduction to female terrorism in America, including the history of U.S. female terrorists (i.e., the American “New Women” and the Suffragettes).
