ABSTRACT

This chapter is designed to highlight the considerations of a culturally sensitive practice when conducting cognitive assessments with Asian Americans. Potential issues and barriers of neuropsychological evaluations – such as linguistic limitations, significant differences in education attainment, paucity of culturally sensitive measures, lack of accessibility to heath care, misconceptions or inadequate understanding of cognitive impairment, and concurrent mood symptoms with cognitive impairment – are identified when working with this population. The chapter also presents a tentative guide for strategies in the process of test selection, administration, and interpretation to improve testing validity and reliability. The chapter then advances by introducing commonly used cognitive screening tools modified specifically for Asian Americans. The chapter concludes with a review of current limitations and future directions to improve cognitive assessments with Asian Americans and to raise awareness of ongoing work needed for a culturally sensitive assessment.
