ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces stereotypes and to lead into a discussion on how they are formed and their relative degree of accuracy. Data from the demonstration illustrate advances in measurement, which can help students understand the cognitive basis of social stereotypes. The technique is appropriate for courses in general psychology, social psychology, attitude and survey research, or any other class that covers measurement. Gender stereotyping is a core topic in courses on the psychology of women and gender. It is important for students to learn the content of gender stereotypes and their function as social demands. Results of the demonstration provide a method for assessing the accuracy of various stereotypes. The purpose of the exercise is to convey to participants the powerful cognitive, affective, and behavioral impact of stereotypes on the perceiver as well as the target. Assignments that highlight issues of race and gender are valuable when placed in the context of theories of racial identity.
