ABSTRACT

One of the most important challenges facing the Chief Learning Officer (CLO) is to demonstrate the success of the learning investment. For almost a decade, assessment, measurement, evaluation, and analytics have dominated conference agendas and professional meetings. Even top executives have stepped up their appetite for impact and return on investment (ROI) data. This chapter shows how to implement a comprehensive evaluation system that can boost success. Scripps Health is a not-for-profit San Diego–based healthcare system that is successful on any dimension. Among the processes used by Scripps is the ROI Methodology, a process that shows the success of healthcare improvement projects using six types of data with standards and a process model. Recent studies suggest the use of ROI is growing in a variety of areas. In the learning and development arena, there are signs that ROI is becoming a dominant tool showing the value of programs and projects.
