ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with motor performance metrics, such as output torque, torque ripple, and torque-speed profiles. It discusses the different motor operations, for instance, constant torque, constant power, duty cycles, and drive cycles. There are various geometrical and operational parameters that need to be taken into account during the design process of an switched reluctance motors (SRM). The torque in each phase of an SRM is dependent on the relative position between the stator and rotor poles, and the level of excitation current. Maximum average torque values at different speed points define the shape of an electric motor’s torque-speed profile. The rated torque of an electric motor is the peak average torque in the constant torque region. In addition, the direct current (DC) link current ripple will be lower in higher phase machines, which helps reduce the DC link capacitance requirement in the converter.
