ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to throw more light on the meaning of design with a view to providing a framework for a better understanding of the design concept as well as to add to the existing knowledge in design studies. It focuses on design as a major contributing factor to non-price competitiveness. The chapter reviews the definitions of design and examines the different interpretations attached. It highlights the differences/conflict between two disciplines - engineering design and industrial design. They include gaps in education, status, and product/project presentation. The chapter explores the ways of integrating engineering design and industrial design. It discusses the major computer aids for design. The chapter discusses the need for professionalism in design management so an organizational framework may evolve whereby engineering designers and industrial designers and indeed all allied professions may work in harmony as a team to produce competitive and commercially successful products.
