ABSTRACT

This chapter defines the ontological reality of design as the minimal and elementary unit of conceptual entities from which design materializes; that is, it is carried out independently of the time and space in which the event takes place. It highlights the need to consider the use and enjoyment of the object as an integral part of the design process. The chapter reflects on the role reality plays in research, emphasizing its importance as an object of study or field of research and describes the ontological elements that make up the reality of design. The graphic representation shows three conceptual components: the ontological entities of design, as well as the relationships given between them; that is, it shows a timeless conceptualization of the act of design, its diachronic reality. In all reality there are elements that are transformed – diachronic reality – and others that remain and manifest themselves in a universal and timeless way – synchronic reality.
