ABSTRACT

This paper deals with the hydraulic design of stepped spillway and develops a methodology for a design of stepped spillways for skimming flow regime. The paper suggests a criteria for suitability of stepped spillways in terms of design parameters. A method for fixation of step geometry from the consideration of minimizing the length of stilling basin is described. Adopting prototype data of Tehari dam project in India, the procedure of design is illustrated as an example. Considerable reduction in the length of stilling basin is possible by adopting a stepped spillway.
