ABSTRACT

This chapter examines people's own fixed or growth mindsets, philosophies around sharing and collaboration, and means of overcoming frustration. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning has identified five social and emotional learning core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. A recent highlight of select literature on makerspaces revealed that whether they are mobile, dedicated, or distributed throughout an organization, makerspaces are popping up in libraries, museums, schools, and community-based organizations nationwide. In 1942, Hedy Lamarr and composer George Antheil patented an idea that later became the basis for secure military communications and mobile phone technology. Research has consistently shown that play activities that are freely chosen and youth-directed are a key component of the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of children. Ginsberg states, "Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity and physical, cognitive and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development".
