ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the reader to the research and practice of coaching for both students and teachers, with a particular emphasis on coaching for mental toughness. Central to the coaching process is the clarification and articulation of personal and professional goals, goals that are generally set to stretch an individual's current capacities. The strengths-based coaching pilot programme was associated with significant increases in the students' self-reported levels of engagement and hope. Coaching however focuses primarily on the application of methods that encourage individuals to set and strive for personally meaningful goals within the framework of a collaborative relationship. Coaches may falsely assume that those presenting for coaching fall within the "normal population". Whilst coaching is often viewed as a systematic process relying on the use of a coaching model such as Goal, Reality, Options, Will (GROW), there are two other elements that are crucial to the successful outcomes of coaching: the skills of coaching and a particular "way of being".
