ABSTRACT

A major rationale for this book is the assumption that feminist therapists benefit from examining their personal assumptions and considering the compatibility of these assumptions with various feminist theoretical perspectives. The goal of this activity is to encourage counselors and therapists to create personal models of feminist therapy that reflect clarity and consistency of theory and practice. Feminist therapy can be best described as a conceptual framework or philosophical perspective for organizing one’s assumptions about psychotherapy, and the theories described in this book are useful for clarifying this metaframework. Theory provides a foundation that can be used to guide practice, allow an overarching overview of one’s work and goals, and create a base from which to engage in self-reflective practice.
