ABSTRACT

In this chapter, theory and research explaining why self-confidence is important for young athletes is reviewed. Seven case studies are described to illustrate important psychosocial issues that influence confidence development in young athletes. First, the importance of physical literacy for the development of physical competence is explored. Second, developmental changes in confidence are explained, including significant sources of competence at different maturational levels. Third, a personal mastery approach is suggested to maintain a stable sense of confidence with early maturing athletes. Fourth, learned helpless is explained as an attributional pattern that debilitates the confidence of young athletes. Fifth, the importance of understanding coach expectancy effects and feedback related to the size and physical maturation of young athletes is discussed. Sixth, the importance of developing and reinforcing a growth mindset in young athletes is emphasised. Finally, the restoration of confidence following a performance slump is discussed. For each case study, practical explanations are provided for what the practitioner should know and what the practitioner can do in each case.
