ABSTRACT

This chapter considers students' self-belief and the interventions they can make to enhance self-belief and students' sense of their capability. It focuses on the development of self as a socially responsible citizen, preparing students not only with skills and knowledge, but also with flexibility, creativity and moral courage for an uncertain world in the future. A number of factors have influenced the growing emphasis on students' development of self, including widening and increasing participation and attrition rates. Another way that institutions are engaging with student transition is through personal tutoring. The Quality Code for universities in the UK stipulates an expectation that students will be supported in their personal and professional development from entering to leaving higher education, and that this is the joint responsibility of academic staff and professional services. Global citizenship can enter the curriculum through engagement with global issues such as climate change, pollution, sustainability, equity, justice, prejudice and discrimination, as illustrated in the case studies.
