ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses curriculum development in the international context, with a case study of developing social work curriculum in Vietnam. Competency-based education (CBE) has been emerging in Vietnam as the country transitions from the traditional top-down teaching style typical in Asian countries towards a more student-centered approach. Cultural values play a large role in shaping the world views, behaviors, and practices of a society. Moreover, cultural values are often reflected in and transmitted through the educational system. CBE is composed of three general components that are learner-centered. Firstly, CBE focuses on information or skills that the learner should acquire based on professional standards for what the eventual practitioner would need for practice. Secondly, CBE delineates specific and measurable competency statements. Thirdly, the learner is provided with immediate feedback on assessment performance, which is based on the competencies developed in the field of the profession.
