ABSTRACT

In this chapter we look at what it is to be literate, providing you with an overview of the myriad pieces of information available about the development of language and literacy skills. We will explore the importance of learning through talk, looking at the types of communication strategies available. We consider the acquisition, function and importance of speaking and listening, reading and writing skills and the impact they have on developing learning. We show how stories can be used to underpin the development of many forms of literacy and we include a brief analysis of the barriers that can delay language acquisition. Alongside this we consider the ways in which learners can be supported by teaching assistants and look at the key vehicle for the teaching of language in schools – The Literacy Hour.
