ABSTRACT
The designation by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) of a political leader's ideas as 'thought' (sixiang) is a momentous decision. The Party's reservation began to change in 1992. The May issue of the CCP's internal document, Neibu tongxin, revealed that before his death, Marshal Nie Yongzhen had recommended that 'Deng Xiaoping thought' be formally incorporated into the work report of the soon-tobe-convened Fourteenth Party Congress. In June 1993, the Communist Party determined that Deng Xiaoping was 'the outstanding representative and glorious exemplar of the defense, maintenance and development of Marxism-Leninism-Mao Zedong Thought'. Deng, in a very real sense, is a better Marxist theoretician than Mao Zedong. Mary Matossian, in her seminal piece, 'Ideologies of Delayed Industrialization', noted the prevalence of a certain type of ideology among the less developed nations. To begin with, Deng has returned to the historic mission of twentieth-century-Chinese revolutions.
