ABSTRACT

The diabetes have tow types, Type I is juvenile diabetes and a disease of the immune system that attacks the beta cells and Type II is adult-onset diabetes. This chapter discusses Type I, diabetes, which primarily affects school-aged individuals and is treated with insulin injections because of an inadequate production of insulin. Children with Type I diabetes may be deficient in insulin production and in their ability to use insulin, it is necessary for teachers and school personnel to understand the metabolic process involved in the disease. They should be taken to a physician or hospital immediately for an injection of insulin, though all parties involved should remember that the situation is not easily reversed and resolved with insulin. The lack of glucose output in diabetics may advance the onset of hypoglycemia unless individuals decrease the amount of insulin or increase the amount of carbohydrates consumed.
